Indoor Smoking – What You Need to Know

In Sweden, indoor smoking is prohibited in public places. On June 1, 2005, smoking was banned indoors in restaurants and other food service establishments. In addition, there are a number of other places where the smoking ban applies. Read more about indoor smoking here!

Indoor smoking is prohibited in the following places:

Smoke-free indoor environments include most places intended for public gatherings. Some examples of places covered by the Act on Tobacco and Similar Products, which now regulates the smoking ban, are the following:

• facilities intended for children’s and youth activities
• health care
• common areas in residential buildings and facilities providing special services or care
• public transportation
• public gathering places
• hotels
• restaurants and dining establishments

In some places, there are specific rooms designated for indoor smoking. However, there is no legal obligation to provide smoking rooms. Smoking rooms are common on boats, for example, because smoking outdoors on deck is considered a safety hazard.

Is smoking allowed indoors at home?

There is no legal ban on indoor smoking in private residences. If you live in a house you own, it’s up to you whether you want to smoke indoors. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that smoking indoors can lower the value of your home if you decide to sell it.

Can you smoke in your apartment?

In Sweden, it is generally permitted to smoke indoors in your own apartment, but this right is not unlimited. Smoking must not cause disturbance to neighbors, for example by allowing smoke or odors to spread through ventilation systems, stairwells, or into adjacent units. In both rental apartments, landlords or homeowners’ associations may also have their own rules that completely or partially prohibit smoking even inside the apartment. If smoking violates such rules or leads to repeated complaints, it may ultimately have consequences for your tenancy.
