IQOS vs. cigarettes: What’s the difference?
IQOS and traditional cigarettes are both tobacco products, but they differ in terms of technology, how they are used, and how the tobacco is processed. The differences mainly concern how nicotine and other substances are released, as well as how the products are designed.
What is a cigarette?
A cigarette consists of tobacco rolled in paper and often fitted with a filter. When used, the cigarette is lit and the tobacco is burned at high temperatures, usually over 600 degrees. This combustion produces smoke containing nicotine, as well as a large number of other chemical substances.
What is IQOS?
IQOS is a heated tobacco product that uses electronic technology to heat tobacco without burning it. IQOS is used with specially designed tobacco sticks. The tobacco is heated to a lower temperature than during combustion, usually up to about 350 degrees. Since the tobacco does not burn, no traditional cigarette smoke is produced; instead, a vapor is created that contains nicotine and other substances released when the tobacco is heated.
Differences Between IQOS and Cigarettes
The most fundamental difference between IQOS and cigarettes is how the tobacco is processed:
- Cigarettes: The tobacco is burned through ignition.
- IQOS: The tobacco is heated without combustion.
This means that the processes that release nicotine and other substances differ. Combustion and heating are two different chemical processes that affect which substances are formed and in what quantities.
The way they are used also differs in practice. A cigarette burns continuously once lit, while IQOS is electronically controlled and turned on and off by the user.
IQOS is a smoke-free alternative to cigarettes
IQOS is based on many years of research and is a smoke-free alternative to cigarettes, intended for adult users who smoke. Our journey toward a smoke-free future began as early as 2008, and our goal is to help make Sweden one of the first smoke-free countries in the world.
