Tobacco Meets Modern Technology

The technology goes hand in hand with the science. We have developed a whole new way of using tobacco by combining science and technology. The result is IQOS.

Heating vs. Burning

Heating tobacco, rather than burning it, may seem like a small change - but it redefines the tobacco experience. When using a cigarette, the tobacco burns at more than 800°C at the tip, creating smoke and ash. When using the IQOS it heats tobacco to a temperature up to 350°C, releasing the tobacco flavour and nicotine without burning the tobacco.

HEATSTICKS

The tobacco used together with the IQOS comes in heatsticks under the HEETS brand. Compared to cigarettes, heatsticks are much shorter and are used in a completely different way than cigarettes. The reason for this is that when a cigarette is lit, it burns the tobacco. Combustion releases nicotine as well as the taste of the tobacco, but the combustion also burns more than half of the tobacco in the cigarette.

IQOS HeatControl™ Technology uses a heated blade to heat the tobacco inside our specially designed heatstick. With HeatControl™ Technology, the consumption of tobacco is controlled based on the use, which results in less tobacco being used than for combustion.
