The idea of heating tobacco instead of burning it has been around for some time. After years of research and development at Philip Morris International (PMI), it finally came to life, offering our innovative alternative to traditional cigarettes for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke or use other nicotine products. A cigarette has to be lit in order to be smoked. PMI’s heated tobacco device IQOS heats up processed tobacco at lower temperatures, releasing tobacco flavor with no fire, no ash, and no smoke smell.
What are heated tobacco products?
Heated tobacco products do exactly what their name suggests: they heat tobacco instead of burning it. IQOS heats tobacco up to 350°C without burning it. This delivers a cigarette like experience, without any fire, ash or smoke smell.
Heated tobacco means that the tobacco is heated in a controlled manner at a lower temperature instead of being burned. This gives a tobacco flavour without creating smoke, fire or ash.
Inside the IQOS there is a ceramic blade connected to the heat sticks. When you start the IQOS by pressing the button on the device, the ceramic blade heats up the tobacco and vapour is created.
The advantage of heated tobacco is that the tobacco does not burn and thus no smoke is created.
How does IQOS work?
All IQOS devices work in the same way. A brief description is that IQOS is used together with our tobacco sticks. You insert a tobacco stick into your unit and press a button to turn on the heater. Through an even heating process in IQOS, this results in a cigarette-like taste and experience but without fire, ash or smoke smell.
